God I hate spammers
I hate spammers. I really, really hate spammers! I think they should be shot on sight. No trial, just instant execution.
I haven’t been around the blog for a while because of RSI, and while I’ve been away, Akismet seems to have let 20,000 spams through. I usually get a few thousand spams a month, but I guess the spammers smelled blood once some of their comments came through, and within the last couple of weeks, yeah, I’ve been spammed twenty thousand times.
I’m really in the mood to track some of those spammers down and club them to death.
Especially since it is going to take me ages to get rid of the spam again. I’ve tried to get Akismet to recheck all the comments, but I can only make it check the pending comments and those 20k spams are, for some reason, not checked. So I have to delete them manually.
I can delete around 100 at a time, more than that and I get an error from WordPress. And it is not exactly fast deleting 100 comments, so I am not looking forward to doing it 200 times.

You could export all of your blog to XML, delete all posts from the blog, change all the comments’ status to pending or something in the XML, then reimport the modified XML file. I haven’t tried it, but that ought to work, no?

Yes, I could do that, but that would be awfully slow and inefficient as well…
If I could log into the sql server directly I could just delete the last week of comments as well, that would be a nicer approach (although something could be lost it is worth it to get rid of the spam), but I need to contact the guy hosting my server to get access there for that, and I’m not even sure I would know how to do it, so I’ll probably just end up deleting the comments manually. If the filter is working again now, I can do it over a couple of days and just not let new spam flood in in the mean time.

You could try to use a captcha. My visual captcha ( http://amix.dk/blog/post/19338 ) works wonders and works a lot better than Akismet.

RSI break => Lot’s of spam to be removed manually => More RSI and an even longer break => Even more spam to take care of => Even more RSI … hmmmm … this doesn’t look good!

Even with Akismet up and running again I still got mostly SPAM and not HAM. You just didn’t see it because I have turned moderation on. Anyway, I decided to do add a CAPTCHA and found a plugin for that. If it works, I think I’ll turn moderation off, because I don’t really want to go in and moderate all the time, but until I know it works I’ll stick with moderation…
