If I understood correctly it is only 1x of coverage: so it is a very interesting papers, but all the news buzz that has come out, that europeans and asians share sequences with neanderthal, are only good for the newspapers

Not really. With 1x coverage you have enough to conclude what the paper does. Higher coverage would enable more complex analyses, but as far as I can see the results in the paper are definitely solid enough!
