Mindset list for the class of 2013

This is the week where the new freshmen starts at the Faculty of Sciences here at AU.  Each year I am surprised at how young they are.  On an intellectual level, I realise that it is me who’s getting older, but it seems like they are getting younger and younger.

To understand their mindset, something like this list: The Beloit College Mindset List for the class of 2013 might help a bit.

It’s a bit US centric, but with the strong influence we have from the US here in Denmark it still is a very interesting read for me…

As a TA I used to joke that the best test of students future success would be to ask them, after their first year, if they knew where the Department library was.  We have a “first year requirement” here that essentially says that the students should have passed all first year classes within the first year and a half, otherwise they will be thrown out.  I always thought that the library test would be more fitting.

Just a few months ago, I found myself arguing that we shouldn’t even have a library but just replace it with a terminal and a printer, since we get all our papers from Internet searches anyway.

“The times they are a-changin”.

Seriously, what’s up with the subtractions?

I’m trying to keep track of the number of posts this year, to make sure that I meet my new year resolution of posting at least one per day (on average)…

Don’t worry, I’ll only keep going for this year. I’m making too many mistakes there anyway since I mainly copy and paste it and once in a while update it incorrectly…
