You might have noticed that it has gotten very quiet here on the blog.  One of the reasons is that we are in the middle of the exam period here, so I am not really doing anything interesting that I can write about.

The way it works here is that we have four seven-week terms a year, where usually each student takes three classes per term, and each class is followed by an exam.  That is usually an oral exam, where each student is evaluated over twenty minutes from a combination of a presentation and questions from the teacher and censor.

I think it is a reasonable good exam form, but as you can no doubt imagine it is quite time consuming.  What is worse is that it really tires me sitting at these exams, so even if the last exam is early afternoon, I am just not up to working any more after the exams.  Not even just reading or anything.

I don’t even get any work done the days between exams, ’cause getting started on something where I only have a day to complete it before I will be away from research a couple of days more is hard.

Last week I was censoring three Master’s thesis defences instead of research.  That is close enough to sitting in on exams that I could pull myself together to do it.  I also handled a few papers as editor, where I knew I could get the work completed before the next exam.  Actual research, though, is really out of the question for me during the exams.

I have another batch of exams today, and three full days of exams next week.  Then the exam period is over and I can get back to research, and hopefully get blogging again.

Whether I’ll manage to get anything useful done tomorrow or Friday – where I don’t have exams – remains to be seen.  As I wrote above, I cannot be bothered to start on something that will just be interrupted before I have a chance of completing it.

Maybe I should just take the days off and enjoy the sun.  I can always compensate with extra work after the exam period; I don’t have anything much planned for the summer holiday so chances are that I will be working a bit there anyway…
