Fun with PURE
For universities there is a certain bragging rights in the number of publications produced, so of course we need to report all our publications for yearly reports.
The number of publications influence the basic budget for the various departments, not that this is something that means much to the individual researches who do not really see this budget but rely on external grants…
Here at AU (recently nicknamed “the penis university” due to our new logo, see also Aarhus universitys new corporate identity) we report our publications in the PURE system.
I’ve had my problems with this system — mainly because I am officially employed both at BiRC and DAIMI, but the system didn’t use to allow reporting to two different departments — but it has improved a lot over the last year or two and I am quite happy with it now.
Anyway, I was just in there reporting my latest publication and I noticed that I could now see a graph of my publication history.
The image above shows my publications for the last 10 years. Two interesting things to notice are:
- The last ten years go from 2001 to 2009
- They are making predictions about my publications for this year (the light blue)
Now 2001 to 2009, both included, would be nine years, not ten. It is not that I do not have any publications earlier than 2001, their counting is just wrong.
Not that it matters much.
What worries me is the prediction for this year. They expect me to publish 17 papers this year. I do not know how they predict this, but this is not something I have ever been even close to. My record is 10 in one year.
I hope they do not hold me accountable for this prediction…
