This is probably the easiest way to install Python 2.6 on Vista:
http://blog.dinel.org.uk/?p=125

You do need to create a bat-file, but other than that, it is quick and it works (at least for me).

Hi Thomas,

I just tried installing Python 2.5 on my Vista machine. This works without any problems. Just launch the installer.

Installing Python 2.6 on the other hand...

There is a note on the Python download page, stating that to install on Vista you need to be logged in as 'Administrator' or use the following command:

runas /user:Administrator "msiexec /i [path]\[file].msi"

Notice, that even if your user has 'administrator' privileges you are still not the 'Administrator' user! So you must change to the 'Administrator' user account before proceeding.

But per default the 'Administrator' user in Vista has been disabled... Of course you may enable it again: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766343.aspx but this will certainly scare people away.

Well, I'll dig around a bit, and see if I can find an easier way to install...

If possible just ask your students to install Python 2.5.
